Summary: For this project, we wanted to explore the concept of how best to design an experience for a museum about space. Right now, most museums about space try to convey a lot of large facts and figures that are difficult to understand or relate to. We wanted to create an experience that allowed users to feel more connected to space by having them embody a planet. People feel disconnected from the Earth because they only ever experience a tiny part of it. We want to allow people to have a larger experience outside of themselves, to expand their tiny part of the Earth into a whole planet, and let that experience show them that their problems are not so bad. By allowing them to experience this together, it is our hope that they will feel more connected to each other, and more connected to the universe as well. Astronauts who have traveled to space experience something called the Overview Effect; this basically says that the first time you see the Earth from space, you realize how small and fragile humanity is, and how important it is to cherish it and protect it.
What is the purpose of a space museum?
Is it teaching facts or is it to inspire about space? Thats when we realized that space museum have an important job to inspire people. We looked at different ways that it can inspire people like inspire kids about space and inspire everyone to look at bigger picture.
The focus in this project was on experience (not the design detail but the experience created by the design) and how to break away from designers fixation. We used creative methods such as experience prototype, pastiche scenarios and critical design to explore different design concepts.
